ARTIST STATEMENT

Attention to Detail

insert self portrait I long to live in a culture where there is a healthier balance of survival and creativity and where making art is central to daily life. I am drawn to indigenous art from West Africa and especially the Amazon Basin where feathers are frequently used in the creation of ceremonial clothing. I am inspired by the innate message that art making is both sensible and sacred.

This body of work grew out of my desire to make art that is more intuitive and less intellectual. I grew up sewing and was trained in textile design. The narrative here is the wordless conversation between the artist and her artwork and the magical combustion of hands and materials.

I hope that my visual vocabulary conveys some aspect of my sensation and experience of being female in this culture. This work is indigenous to my inner homeland, a place of solitude, speculation and passion.
